The National University Hospital of Iceland  (Landspítali)

Description

The National University Hospital of Iceland needed a patient-facing app to simplify hospital stays. We designed an intuitive tool that helps patients, parents, and caregivers stay informed, involved, and confident throughout the care journey.

Landsspítalinn is the largest health-care employer in Iceland.

The mission

Hospital stays are stressful, so we set out to make patients feel in control, not overwhelmed. The app provides transparency on admissions, tests, treatments, and messaging—all wrapped in a calm, accessible, and secure interface that serves patients and their families alike.

UX DESIGN

Designed for peace of mind

We focused on clarity, calmness, and control. Patients can view and manage admissions, test results, appointments, allergy info, and answer questionnaires. The app lets parents and caregivers securely access their loved ones’ information. Inpatients can track real-time vital signs and medication administration—all designed to reduce stress and boost confidence during vulnerable moments.

VISUAL DESIGN

Clean, calm, and comforting

We built on the hospital’s existing brand and style, boosting accessibility with stronger color contrast. The design creates a soothing, easy-to-navigate experience. Soft colors and intuitive layouts guide patients and caregivers through complex info—test results, questionnaires, and educational materials—making digital care feel approachable and human.

DEVELOPMENT

Design meets dev

We began collaborating with Advania before transitioning to work directly and closely with Landspítali’s internal dev and product teams. Through ongoing design iterations and tight teamwork, we ensured smooth implementation and continuous improvements.

ACCESSIBILITY

Built for everyone’s needs

Accessibility guided every design choice. Large tap targets, high contrast, and plain language make the app easy to use for everyone, regardless of ability.
